2009 BBQ competition season comes to an end…

It was the best year yet for Blind Pig BBQ! We had some great finishes and participated in some outstanding events, although the big KCBS win still eludes us. The team came together well and is now more of a family event with cousins Joe Cylc and Steve Calvert and my brother Jeff Bera chipping in. The highlight of the season was the overall win in ribs at the Garry Maddox Challenge (and not just because we won World Series tix!). In 2005 this was the event that started my BBQ obsession (addiction is more like it), making this year's win even sweeter. During the off season I plan to get some modifications done to the cooker by Melvin at Meadow Creek BBQ and possibly add a rotisserie pig cooker to my ever growing inventory of toys – did I mention the addiction part? I’ll be posting update pics of the cooker and the 2010 BBQ schedule to the web site. Thanks to everyone who supported us and to those who came out and help with the beer consumption! A special thanks to Joe Kelly of the Fairmount Sports Association for having us cook for their annual golf outing this year, it was a great experience and hopefully we can do it again.

See ya in 2010!

Where does the time go…

Well another year of competition BBQ has come and gone. Our first year with the new smoker was a big learning experience – but a lot of fun. We picked up a 4th place ribs at the Maryland State BBQ competition in BelAir, Md. and a 4th place chicken in New Holland, PA. Thanks to Greg Booker for helping us out this year, hopefully we can get him out again in 09! Thanks to everyone who supported us, Fred and Deb for that great salsa in New Holland!! And as always, thanks to Jeff Bera and Joe Cylc for their contributions to the team.

I’d especially like to thank Jack Rhubright for all he has done for the team. He has been there from the beginning and I could not have done this without him. This was his last year Q’n with me and I wish him good luck and a relaxing retirement!

Some personal issues caused us to cut our season short but we are already looking forward to 2009. See ya on the BBQ circuit!

Our first full BBQ competition season has come to an end.

Withdrawal is already setting in! We had some ups and downs, met some great people and learned a lot. We picked up our first awards at the New Jersey Sate BBQ Championship in Wildwood, we lived through the tornado–force winds at the Diamond State BBQ competition in Delaware, and ended up ranking 350 nationally out of 1310 teams that made the list on the National BBQ Rankings. Check it out at www.nationalbbqrankings.com. We had the privilege of hanging out with some great folks, eating some awesome food and consuming some excellent “beverages”. I think I only gained 30 pounds… Not bad.

We have some plans for next season which include upgrading the equipment and possibly doing a little catering.

Thanks to everyone who supported us! See you in 2008.
